The Field Operations Officer will work within the Field Operations team under the broad direction of the Field & Clothing Systems Coordinator, working on various projects and activities relating to the provision of field support to the Australian Antarctic Program. The Field Equipment Officer is based in the Australian Antarctic Division Field Store and is responsible for the suitability, compliance, serviceability, maintenance/repairs and inventory management of AAD field equipment. This role contributes to preparation, delivery and refurbishment of field equipment to support pre-deployment field training activities. The Field Operations environment is a dynamic and changeable one which requires a flexible and nimble approach to the way daily functions are prioritised.

**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.
These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- protect the Antarctic environment
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

Operations & Logistics Branch plans, coordinates, facilitates and delivers operations for the AAP. We protect the health, safety and well-being of expeditioners. We enable the resupply and sustainment of our stations, move personnel and support science while building operational capability to deliver future Antarctic projects.

The Station & Field Operations Section is responsible for coordinating and providing operational support for science and other designated projects and programs. The section oversees leadership, management and sustainment of Australia’s four Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations; coordination and support of field activities including deep field capability; provision of clothing and kitting for all expeditioners; and implementation of a modern traverse capability and inland station operations.

**The Job**
Key duties include, but are not limited to:

- Coordinating head office based stocktake of field equipment and supports station based stocktake activities.
- Maintaining the electronic inventory management system to ensure that critical items of safety and personal protective equipment are maintained and supplied in a timely manner.
- Delivering support in the form of field equipment to the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) pre-departure training for expeditioners.
- Supporting the management of critical training and equipment supply timelines to ensure that field support is delivered in a timely manner including electronic consignment of cargo.
- Maintaining land, aviation and marine safety, survival and head office training equipment.
- Assisting in the delivery of deep field camps to the AAP by supporting the bespoke and evolving needs of field operations in extremely remote environments.
- Supporting the vision and objectives of the Station & Field Operations section.

The successful applicant must:

- hold and maintain a current manual driver’s licence
- wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures

Required:

- Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and prioritise work in a rapidly evolving operational environment.
- Proven ability to communicate, liaise and maintain relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience undertaking research and analysis to support informed decision making.
- Strong and demonstrable understanding of the use, maintenance and preparation of field and survival safety equipment.
- Demonstrable experience or qualifications in the delivery of outdoor education and training.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire new skills and knowledge and become an efficient and effective team member.
- Experience working in a fast-paced team environment including the planning and implementation of operational projects and activities.

Desirable:

- Experience working with and/or supporting teams in remote locations.
- Knowledge of and/or experience working within the Australian Antarctic Program.
- Experience working with electronic inventory management systems.
- Demonstrate knowledge computer systems including Word, Excel, Outlook, CM10 (or similar electronic records management system) and other related programs.
