**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.

These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- protect the Antarctic environment
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.

The Technology and Innovation Branch leads the design and development of new capabilities, and innovative and emerging technologies for the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) and Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) in the areas of science, operations and asset management. We manage core technical functions and facilities, curate and deliver data, mapping and information collections, and support the AAD in providing platforms to deliver world leading AAP outcomes. Our Branch is also responsible for commissioning and managing the science systems on board the AAD’s new ice breaker vessel, RSV Nuyina. The Technology and Innovation Branch comprises five sections.

The Polar Linkages Section is a high performing team that plays a critical role in the organisation, with responsibilities including the introduction of new technologies to enhance AAD programs and contributing to high-level planning. The Polar Linkages Section operates in a dynamic environment; the position manages and supervises a small team delivering on highly complex work and projects, often under short time frames and concurrently.

**The Job**
The Capability Development Manager reports directly to the Polar Linkages Manager who will provide broad guidance on the tasks to be performed. Based at the Head Office of the Australian Antarctic Division in Kingston, the Capability Development Manager is responsible for leading a small team in support of T&I Branch functions and initiatives and the AAP’s Science program.

The Capability Development Manager will be pro-active, flexible, adaptable and able to work in environments which are sometimes stressful and where priorities change, sometimes in short and / or shifting time frames. The successful applicant will be a motivated self-learner and starter with broad technical awareness as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. They will have the skills and capacity to lead a small team and develop and support quality working relationships with a range of stakeholders to develop proposals, respond to needs, manage expectations and solve problems. They will have sound judgement and highly developed problem-solving capabilities and the ability to prioritise between competing high-level demands as well as good time management skills. They will be adaptive, proactive, innovative and resilient.

Under guidance from the Polar Linkages Manager, the Capability Development Manager is required to:

- manage Capability Development plans aligned with higher level AAD guidance such as the Science Decadal Plan and the Technological Decadal Plan
- coordinate T&I Branch engagement with and input into major AAD projects (examples include the Hobart Antarctic Science Precinct development and the redevelopment of Antarctic stations and supporting infrastructure)
- manage projects in support of T&I Branch activities
- assist with long term planning within the AAD/AAP including the provision of advice to stakeholders on RSV Nuyina’s capabilities, science planning and technical support requirements, policies, procedures and processes
- develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the AAD to ensure appropriate technical expertise is consulted with in support of T&I Branch tasking
- oversee the management of AAD and Branch technical and support equipment to ensure items are maintained and inspected in accordance with relevant policies
- provide services to stakeholders including managing and resolving resourcing conflicts and problem solving
- work with the Polar Linkages Manager to ensure that clear and realistic work plans and goals are defined and achieved for the Projects team
- lead a small team and support and actively promote a culture of safety, compliance and continuous improvement within the work place (including on vessels at sea and at Antarctic field sites)
- assist in ensuring that the AAD can meet its policy and government objectives.
