In the role of Principal Legal Officer, you will be part of a team of administrative and legal staff and ensure that, amongst other things, contraventions of transport-related legislation are efficiently and effectively prosecuted.Accountabilities include: - Represent the department in summary prosecutions, callovers and sentences in the Magistrates Court and appellate proceedings in the District Court. - Provide high quality legal advice, particularly in relation to regulatory enforcement powers, prosecutorial issues and administrative law, some of which may be complex or sensitive, within competing timeframes. Liaise with legal representatives regarding preliminary hearing issues, requests for particulars and submissions. Prepare matters for sentence. Draft legal documents, such as complaints and summonses, and appellate documents. Where necessary, prepare briefings and instructions to Counsel on matters of a complex legal nature. Provide advice with respect to the drafting of legislation and statutory instruments. Provide support and guidance to junior legal and administrative staff in the delivery of quality legal services. Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with officers of the department and external parties. Carry out other duties of a legal and administrative nature in a timely manner. Deliver successful business outcomes individually and as a team member with an emphasis on meeting deadlines within quality, cost and time constraints. Provide sound options or recommendations to internal and external stakeholders, and assist in the development of business practices, policy and legislation. Prepare correspondence, reports, briefing notes and submissions in accordance with departmental standards. Lead, contribute and assist in activities or working groups that support and enhance the division's business plan and the department's objectives, values, and performance. Actively seek and participate in professional development. Consult, liaise and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues, develop recommendations, strategies and/or policies.
