The Principal Legal Officer provides expert legal support by advising on complex legal matters and drafting legal documents. Key duties include delivering timely, accurate legal advice across diverse areas; drafting and negotiating legal instruments, representing the department in tribunals, managing external legal providers, fostering stakeholder relationships, supporting legal team operations and strategy and ensuring compliance with legal systems, policies and continuous improvement initiatives.

Transport and Main Roads is currently seeking a Principal Legal Officer to work within the Legal Services team.

Some Of Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Provide well researched, timely, practical and accurate legal advice to departmental staff at all levels of the organisation on a wide range of complex and sensitive legal matters including statutory interpretation, workplace law, work health and safety, industrial relations, general litigation and administrative law.
  • Negotiate, draft and settle a wide range of legal documents including notices, decisions, letters, submissions, memorandum of understanding, agreements, deeds, affidavits and witness statements, instruments of appointment and instruments of delegation.
  • Representing the department in the QHRC, QIRC and QCAT.
  • Instruct and manage service delivery by external legal providers on behalf of the department.

Mandatory Qualifications And Conditions
  • Due to this role having access to sensitive data, a criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment to the role.
  • Holds a Degree in Law and has been admitted or is eligible to be admitted as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of Queensland.
