
Disability Transition Officer

As a Disability Transition Officer, you are accountable for the delivery of personalised support for students with disabilities transitioning from secondary school (including specialist schools and alternate education settings) to Chisholm Institute.
Working within a ‘Team Around the Learner’ framework this position is responsible for the guidance and monitoring of students throughout their first 90 days of enrolment. The role will partner with secondary schools to develop understanding of the TAFE environment and share transition best practice within the Victorian TAFE Network.
You will be a key and active participant of the Student Support and Engagement team, with a specific focus on supporting the Senior Secondary team, and will provide expertise to colleagues across the Institute, students, and external support service providers to reduce barriers for young adults and create a more inclusive and supporting learning environment.
As a Disability Support Officer, your key responsibilities will be to
- Identify the educational support needs of students with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition
- Develop a plan for the student’s first 90 days of transition, outlining supports and key actions to be undertaken during the period to make the transition easier.
- Facilitate wrap around support for students transitioning to TAFE including, student support group meetings prior to enrolment with the student, comprising allied health professionals, Chisholm disability staff, Chisholm education representatives, and someone from the student’s secondary school (if possible), to help students understand course capabilities, Reasonable Adjustments available and placement expectations
- Provide advice and guidance to Chisholm community in relation to any disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition-related query and potential impacts of these on study.
- Liaise with Chisholm staff to ensure reasonable adjustments are implemented in line with the Disability Standards for Education.
- Work with eligible students (and their families) to help them understand their rights regarding Reasonable Adjustment and how Reasonable Adjustments work in a TAFE context.
- Maintain professional contact with disability support staff across the Institute as well as across the VET/TAFE sector, and contribute to appropriate networks, such as the TAFE Disability Network (TDN) to keep abreast of new initiatives.
**ABOUT YOU**
You are a highly motivated individual with
- Post-secondary qualification, degree and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience.
- Extensive experience working in the field of equity and diversity, including an understanding of relevant legislation.
- Extensive knowledge of and commitment to anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation, particularly as it applies to people with disabilities.
- Well-developed communication and liaison skills applied in the context of supporting the learning needs of students with disabilities.
- An appropriate understanding of the policy and legislative settings relating to the provision of support to students with disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver information, resources and training to build the capacity of others in support of people with a disability undertaking educational and life transitions
- General awareness of, and familiarity with, the secondary school and Victorian Vocational Education and Training environments, and the capacity to source specialist information from other areas within the institution to problem solve matters associated with the student’s transition.
