**The Role**
The Protected Satellite Communications Group seeks a highly motivated scientist or engineer to undertake research in laser satellite communications (satcom), working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Participation in field trials, including occasional night time work, at local and possibly remote locations will be required. Engagement with collaborators and Defence clients may result in the requirement to undertake domestic and international travel.

The Information Sciences Division undertakes research and development focused on identifying, analysing and countering threats to Australia’s Defence and national security through electronic means.

Contested Communications Major Science & Technology Capability's (MSTC) mission is to develop survivable tactical communications and electronic warfare solutions for contested and degraded cyber electromagnetic environments.

Protected Satellite Communications (PSC) STC undertakes research and development of, and provides S&T advice on, satellite communications for resilient deployed and mobile tactical networking. PSC research activities include:

- SATCOM Network Defence,
- Laser Satellite Communications, and
- Future Satellite Communications Technologies.
- An aptitude and interest in hardware system development and experimentation.
- Programming experience applied to one or more of the following: hardware control, numerical modelling, data processing, data acquisition.
- Experience in one or more of these languages: python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, C/C++.
- A high level of interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve work outcomes.
- Capacity and willingness to broaden skill and knowledge base from those encompassed by formal training and background.
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience in optical systems and lasers, and/or space optical systems and telescopes is desirable.
- Knowledge of optical communication systems and/or space orbital dynamics is desirable but not essential.
- Ability and willingness to participate in field trials.
