**The Role**
Networks are the backbone of modern, global communications systems for internet and telecommunications services.

Your role will be to contribute to enhanced network situational awareness, transforming communication measurement and characterisation into tangible mission knowledge for Protect and Disrupt. You will help build capability to recover latent knowledge of communication networks through characterisation, modelling, analysis and exploitation of communication data.

This is a research and development role that will grow and draw on skills in communication protocols, data science, and software development.

Working with a team of fellow researchers, duties include:

- Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of the algorithms, technologies and architectures behind global internet and telecommunications systems.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders in order to identify key requirements.
- Recognise, propose and pursue related research challenges in the domain of communication network situational awareness.
- Conceive and develop technology demonstrators to help transition research outcomes to stakeholders.
- Participate in research collaborations through interactions with FVEY research partners, Australian universities, and industry.
- Prepare written reports and conference papers to scientific community standards.
- Present work as required, both internally and externally to DST.
- Build constructive relationships with team members and stakeholders and contribute to an environment that fosters S&T excellence.

**About our Team**
Cyber & Signals Intelligence Major Science & Technology Capability develops concepts, techniques and technologies for sensing, characterising and shaping modern communication networks to address challenges in signals intelligence and cyber operations in support of Defence and National Security.

Communication Networks Research (CNR) undertakes research and development in network analytics, network knowledge, and network technologies to solve problems that require the characterisation, modelling and analysis of communication networks.

CNR performs analysis of communication networks at both the logical and information levels drawing on skills from areas including telecommunication networks, graph theory, statistics, decision theory, artificial intelligence, data sciences, machine learning, and software engineering.

This research is critical to enhancing Defence capability in network situational awareness within Cyberspace, to undertake cyber operations, and to protect communication networks of national interest.
- A demonstrated understanding of machine learning workflows, including data engineering techniques and principles, machine learning types, machine learning frameworks, and machine learning model evaluation.
- An interest in cyber security, including familiarity with different types of cyber threat, and technologies designed to protect networks.

There is a requirement to interact with Defence clients and to collaborate with international research partners, academia and industry so you must also show that you can:

- Communicate effectively.
- Work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Adapt to a rapidly changing technological environment.
