**The Role**
Research Engineering (RE) are seeking a suitably qualified and motivated Microfabrication Specialist dedicated to developing a career in miniaturised electronic, electro-optic, nano science and materials research areas (including miniaturised RF hardware).

The successful applicant will undertake design, integration, and assembly of complex micro-scale systems and devices.

The role requires knowledge of microelectronics design and integration of micro-scale devices into larger systems under limited supervision (Mask design, photolithography, physical & chemical vapor deposition, micro-packaging and material characterization SEM and EDS).

The scope of work in this field is growing which will require you to provide high level of technological advice to DST scientists in the field of micro engineering while collaboratively working on research elements of high value projects (e,g. packaging of electro-optics and RF devices).

**Position Duties**
- Lead the development of new capabilities, including equipment, processes in the microfabrication research.
- Lead technically complex projects and provide high level advice to complex technical issues in fabrication, assembly and testing of the fabricated devices.
- Lead the microfabrication capability in areas of packaging, dicing and metrology.
- Operate wire bonders, dicing saw, pick and place machine, scanning electron microscope and metrology equipment
- Foster innovation and develop products from concept to industry transition.
- Work with other areas of RE to support multidisciplinary projects with Micro and Nano Engineering contribution.
- Develop strong collaborative relationships with DST client base, and promote capabilities to support DST S&T program
- Develop and maintain strong external relationships through collaborative activities as part of the Australian Micro and Nano engineering community and leverage academia, external agencies and industry to deliver S&T outcomes.

- Scientific computing including the development and acquisition of a world-class secure High Performance Computing (HPC) capability for advance modelling and simulation
- Nationally recognised, unique and novel research engineering capabilities
- Development and implementation of the Outstanding Research Infrastructure Powering Innovation pillar, a major component of the More Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030
- Defence innovation, science and technology compliance, assurance and sovereignty through complex research safety, research security, workforce capability and talent and scientific resource management RTO also provides specialised research enabling capabilities to other groups and services with Defence, the Australian Intelligence community, our allies and/or our partners in industry and academia.

Research Engineering (RE) branch provides integrated, multi-disciplined, leading edge, rapid response and innovative scientific engineering capability to the Defence S&T program.

RE is dedicated to collaborating closely with DSTG researchers while providing valuable support to Defence and National Security operations and provides capabilities across six functional areas:

- Electronic and Software Engineering;
- Electronic Fabrication;
- Micro and Nano Engineering;
- Mechanical Fabrication;
- Mechanical Engineering; and Scientific Applied Imaging.
- Experience working on multiple programs concurrently
- Experience with being in a researcher role - forecasting immerging technologies, consulting to clients, reporting project milestones and timelines
- Be the technical interface
- Experience with preparing reports and other engineering documents
- Design documents and plans
- A high level of confidence to provide technical leadership to projects
- Develop specifications, designs, and architecture to projects, be the SME
