**The Role**
We are looking for a Collaborative Technology Foresight Lead to join the Defence Impacts of Emerging Technologies (DIET) team which is a part of the Strategy and Joint Force (SJF) team.

The team conducts research and applies methods, tools and analysis techniques of technology foresight, to understand emerging and disruptive technologies in future Defence contexts. The outputs from these activities are used to inform wide-ranging products across Defence and other government departments such as the S&T Strategic Outlook, future operating concepts, Defence force design considerations, future strategic research investment, and prioritisation considerations for Government investment in programs such as the Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF) through the Emerging Disruptive Technology Assessment Symposia (EDTAS).

In this role you will shape, direct and lead our research into technology foresight methods through technical research and analysis of emerging technologies. This will enable DIET to continue world leading research and methods in technology foresight and ensure advice and guidance to Defence and the Government on emerging and disruptive technologies is built upon a foundation of sound theoretical and practical knowledge. You will understand current technology foresight methods and recognise and direct future research opportunities to strengthen existing technology foresight to meet future Defence and Whole of Government requirements.

You will demonstrate and understanding of the factors affecting S&T research and development and their strategic relevance to Defence. The ability to recognise opportunities for the long-term benefit of Defence, to use scientific judgment to analyse options and make decisions on which research areas to influence to maximise Defence outcomes are also key requirements of the position. You will engage within the Defence science and technology ecosystem and communicate the relevance of those technologies in a Defence and National Security context.

**About our Team**
Our team partners with the Critical Technologies Foresight (CTF) Team, who are also a part of SJF, to deliver primarily under DSTG’s Strategic Futures Project. You will be joining a project team of approximately 25 staff, including technology analysts, experts in tools and methods (such as AI experts who write programs to assist the analysts) and social scientists (who evaluate the impact of technology on society).

The Strategic Futures Project is an important capability within government for emerging technology and foresight advice. Our advice feeds into decision-making, such as for senior Defence committees, the Department’s S&T portfolio planning and capability planning for the ADF. We play a key role in whole-of-government decision-making via our strong linkages to the Critical Technology Hub and Scientific Node. We partner with DSTG’s 2000 experts, across Defence, policy and intelligence agencies, and with international experts.

Our team is passionate, professional, welcoming and inclusive.

We seek science-communicators who are passionate about making an impact for the nation. Ideally you will have experience in the APS, or have been responsible for leading and delivering projects in academia or industry. A pre-existing interest in Defence is not required, but you must be open to developing this.

Positions at this level are typically suitable for senior professionals rather than entry level graduates. This role has no formal responsibilities for supervising staff, but you will be expected to show leadership and take responsibility for driving outcomes and enhancing the capabilities of our team.

A PhD or equivalent qualifications/experience is required.
