The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Identity and Biometrics Policy and Strategy Branch delivers end‑to‑end policy leadership on national and international policy issues. It covers the full spectrum of national strategy, state and territory uplift and collaboration, international partnerships and opportunities and the role of identity and biometrics in the Government’s broader cyber, digital and technology agenda.
The Identity and Biometrics Governance and Assurance Section leads on governance, assurance and coordination functions, supporting First Assistant Secretary, Cyber Digital and Technology Policy with high quality delivery of the Department’s Identity and Biometrics Program. It develops and implements key governance frameworks that provide the senior executive with a regular strategic overview of the progress of the Department’s identity and biometrics activities.
**About the role**:
The Identity and Biometrics Governance and Assurance Section runs regular governance meetings to provide the senior executive with oversight of identity and biometrics activities underway across the Department and Australian Border Force. The Program Officer’s role is to assist with administrative support and stakeholder engagement activities so the meetings run smoothly.
The role also involves assisting with preparation, coordination and monitoring of assurance activities (risk and compliance) to enable regular reporting on the Department’s Identity and Biometrics Program governance frameworks. Clear, accurate writing and critical analysis skills will enable you to carry out research and other ad‑hoc tasks to support the Branch and its policy work.
Your work will contribute to the Government’s national security and digital economy objectives through the provision of high quality governance outcomes that support the senior executive with delivery of the Department’s identity and biometrics strategic objectives.
With an eye for detail and a flexible approach, you will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment. Your stakeholder engagement skills will support you to build productive professional relationships and work collaboratively within a team to deliver seamless executive governance meetings and assurance outcomes.
Experience in a secretariat, administration or governance role would be beneficial but is not mandatory; you will be supported in the role with professional development opportunities. The position is based in the Australian Capital Territory, and relocation assistance will not be provided.
