**Who we are**

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:

- Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- Protect the Antarctic environment -understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- Undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.

The Capabilities and Facilities Section supports the advancement of Australia’s strategic, scientific, environmental and economic interests in the Antarctic by:

- Managing the science laboratories, krill aquarium and marine science equipment
- Developing novel scientific instruments and facilities
- Providing technical support to the Australian Antarctic Science program.

**The Job**

The position will report to the Capabilities and Facilities Director and will form an integral element of the Instrument Workshop team. As the Instrument Workshop Manager, you will direct projects through their lifecycle. Key duties will include, but are not limited to;
- Work with stakeholders to develop the scope and requirements documentation
- Manage the team to develop mechanical designs in 3D CAD (Solidworks) to transform the requirements into design documentation
- Liaise with stakeholders to review technical design documentation
- Manage and work in the engineering workshop to manufacture complex mechanical components and systems.
- Managing risk and procurement and contract management processes for projects.
- Develop project management documentation
- Develop and managing project schedules to deadlines
- Develop and manage the Instrument Workshop and project budgets
- Liaise with stakeholders and manage contractors and in-house staff during the manufacturing and commissioning phases
- Lead and implement the Workplace Health and Safety framework within the Instrument Workshop.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**

We are seeking applicants with:

- Proven experience in the management of an engineering fabrication and machine tool workshop.
- Mechanical design experience in the delivery of novel marine and Antarctic science engineering projects.
- Highly developed technical knowledge and experience in manufacturing using manual and CNC machine tools, MIG, and TIG welding.
- Experience in the development, certification and maintenance of containerised science facilities (Including fire and gas detection, and HVAC systems).
- A proven history in the successful delivery of mechanical and multi-discipline engineering projects through the planning, design, manufacturing and commissioning phases.

**Skills and capabilities**
- Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
- Proven expertise in defining and translating complex user requirements into actionable scopes and practical plans for successful project delivery.
- Highly developed decision-making and communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proven ability to generate comprehensive technical and non-technical reports, briefing papers, and other related documentation as required.
- Resilience and adaptability to change and the ability to work independently and effectively manage the team to meet regulatory or project deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to represent the department and the AAD to a wide range of stakeholders while delivering suitable outcomes in complex environments.
- Proficiency with the 3D CAD (Solidworks), Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Project (or equivalent scheduling tool) and electronic document management systems.

**IMPORTANT NOTE**: The successful applicant will be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, therefore they will be expected to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal quality requirements appropriate to working in those environments. They will need to:

- Demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments
