**Position Information**:
Hunter River Community School is an established specialised education setting, K-12 School for Specific Purpose (SSP), catering for the complex needs of 74 students with a diverse range of intellectual, physical, medical, and mental health disabilities and associated conditions. The school is situated in the Maitland area and supports 11 classes. As a result of ongoing school evaluation and reference to educational research, our school priority areas focus on improved learning outcomes for students through, innovative student learning programs, quality teaching and leadership initiatives, enhancing supportive community engagement and participation opportunities, and embracing high potential and gifted education principles. Within our school context, 11% of students identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and 15% are English as an Additional Language or Dialect. The school has a dedicated, highly skilled staff which is effectively supported by our parent body and local community. There is an emphasis on fostering a safe, inclusive, and thriving environment for all students.
**Selection Criteria**:
- Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with diverse intellectual, physical, and medical disability, complex behavioural & mental health needs, with the ability to initiate & lead change & build staff capacity to improve learning outcomes for students with highly diverse needs.
- Proven ability to lead evidence-based & evaluative practices to implement high quality differentiated curriculum including the development & implementation of student personalised learning plans, & student specific plans, that impact positively on student engagement, a culture of inclusion and & school improvement.
- Evidence of a highly visible, approachable, and collaborative leader with a capacity to build & maintain positive, inclusive, trusting relationships & partnerships with students, families, staff, external agencies & the wider community, inclusive of managing the performance of individuals & teams across a complex setting.
- High-level organisational, interpersonal & management skills to balance classroom teaching with the complex administration demands of the Assistant Principal role, in line with Department of Education policies and procedures.
**General Selection Criteria**:
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
