**The Role**
Got an eye for detail and editing experience? Then this is the job for you
The Sea Power Centre - Australia (SPC-A) has a newly created APS6 Editor position which will play an important role in the Royal Australian Navy’s semi-autonomous think tank. We are looking for an experienced editor who has a keen eye for detail, and previous experience working with researchers in the strategic studies, international relations, political science and/or military history fields.
Under general direction and within legislative frameworks, this newly created position will help us develop a consistent style and play a key role in bringing a new range of publications, exhibitions and websites to life.
Key duties of this role are:
- Leading in the development of an in-house style guide for use within the centre by staff, visiting researchers, visiting naval staff, and academic interns.
- Reviewing book manuscripts for consistency, editorial style, and academic conventions for publication.
- Assisting in the production of edited online materials, including historical content on the Navy website, blogs and other research publications for our new Sea Power microsite, and assist in developing content for our social media footprint.
- Reviewing written content for online and in-person exhibitions, checking for consistency in theming, storylines, naming conventions and public accessibility.
- Reviewing and assist in developing materials for conferences and other targeted academic and learning audiences.
**About our Team**
Working to the Head of Navy Research, you will be part of a small team that supports the Sea Power Centre’s responsibility to enhance the understanding of Australia’s maritime environment, the concept of sea power, maritime doctrine and Australia’s naval history and heritage. This role will work with teams across the SPC-A, which is a blended workforce of ADF and APS personnel, as well as providing support to visiting researchers from a variety of backgrounds.
- Evidence of professionally edited outcomes aimed at different audiences.
- Experience in evaluating and assisting with the development of manuscripts and other material that can be used for publication in a variety of forms (including web).
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, and experience in dealing with stakeholders, including those where English is a second language.
- A developed ability to work independently including strong time management and the ability to handle competing priorities.
- A strong team work ethic that supports others to meet team goals and mentor others to develop their writing abilities.
- An understanding of Australia’s military and maritime environment, and a desire to learn more about the role of the Navy.
