**Who we are**

People Division, led by the Chief People Officer (CPO), provides human resources (HR) functions for the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the department) with a clear focus on the department’s most valued asset: its staff. Alongside contemporary HR functions, projects and strategies People Division is also responsible for:

- Enhancing the department’s focus on safety.
- Enterprise bargaining.
- Cultural and change management.
- The department’s response to Australian Public Service (APS) reforms.

People Safety and Remote People Services Branch (PSRPS) is responsible for leading the department’s approach to providing a safe and respectful workplace, including health, safety and wellbeing strategies and change management practices. The PSRPS Branch also provides a strategic partnership offering for Parks Australia and the Australian Antarctic Division, working with these divisions to develop and deliver a suite of HR strategies to manage complex risks associated with these operational areas. The PSRPS Branch is responsible for:

- Professional and Ethical Standards.
- Work, Health and Safety.
- Change Management.
- Parks Partnering.
- AAD Partnering.
- People Support and Wellbeing.

The Work Health and Safety and Wellbeing (WHS) function operates under a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model - recognising the critical and interdependent nature of each team within the function to achieving successful health, safety, and wellbeing solutions, keeping our people safe, and ensuring that safety is at the heart of all we do. The department’s WHS Section (the hub) partners with the business to understand our unique and diverse health, safety and wellbeing needs to design, implement, and support a purpose built WHS Management System and WHS Information System that places our people at the heart of everything we do and enables a positive health and safety culture. The WHS AAD & PAD Section (the spoke) is for the consistent implementation of WHS systems, strategy, and standards across the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and Parks Australia Division (PAD). Our Section are the ‘boots on the ground’ who play a pivotal role in enabling the department to have a unified approach to implementing WHS in our two high-risk operational areas.

**The Job**
As the WHS Assistant Director Safety in Design (AAD) you will be responsible for, but not limited to:

- Designing, maintaining, and leading a consistent and reliable safety in design process.
- Support projects across the AAD from design concept to closure, ensuring adequate governance commensurate to the risk profile.
- Embedding and operationalising safety in design, especially in relation to major infrastructure and plant and equipment projects.
- Effectively designing and implementing controls to enable better risk and compliance outcomes.
- Supporting audit and assurance reviews.
- Delivering and supporting initiatives outlined in AAD’s Safety Improvement Plan.

**Knowledge and experience**

To be successful in this role, you will have proven expertise and a deep knowledge of complex risk assessments and job hazard analyses relating to building and construction works or maintenance.-

- Understand and communicate priorities, monitor progress, anticipate potential changes and drive delivery of work program.
- Consider a diverse range of stakeholder needs, accounting for the broad range of operational and cultural contexts in which the department and its people operate with sensitivity and appropriate care.
- Foster a mindset of continuous improvement within yourself and those you lead, undertaking professional development and training as needed.

**Mandatory qualifications**
- A relevant trade or technical certificate and demonstrated equivalent experience or relevant engineering degree from an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas institution.
- A White Card (issued after May 2009) prior to your employment.
- Recent demonstrated experience (within the last 5 years).
