The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of International Division**:
Members of International Division represent Home Affairs’ interests and priorities internationally and with whole-of-Government counterparts on matters related to complex, contemporary policy challenges. This includes regular liaison and coordination with Home Affairs internal stakeholders and international engagement officers posted overseas, Portfolio agencies, as well as other Government departments and agencies including Defence, Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Prime Minister and Cabinet.

**Overview of the Branches in the Division**:
The_ Asia Branch_ is responsible for international engagement with counterparts in the Asia region on priority issues such as migration, border security, counter terrorism, irregular migration, and transnational crime, and provides strategic advice on these issues to support Executive decision-making. We work with counterpart government representatives in the region, and Australia-based diplomatic officials, to further Portfolio priorities through a program of strategic bilateral and multilateral engagement. The Branch leads the Department's engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Bali Process and other regional fora. Asia Branch liaises with other stakeholder departments and provides briefings to Ministers and senior executives to support engagement across the region. The Branch develops and manages capacity building projects across the region, and works collaboratively with officers at Post to support Regional Directors and deliver high quality strategic outcomes.

The _Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Pacific Branch_ develops and maintains strategic relationships with foreign governments, departments and agencies as well as industry, academic and think tank organisations to help inform the work of Home Affairs and the Portfolio more broadly. Through these relationships, staff pursue Home Affairs interests in bilateral and multilateral fora, identify and develop opportunities for collaboration on Home Affairs policy issues, and support business areas in the Department with advice on developments affecting Home Affairs and Australia’s bilateral relations. Within the Branch, this work spans advising our Ministers and the National Security Committee of Cabinet of issues in the global arena, contributing to and leading negotiations on behalf of the Australian Government to MOUs, delivering international capacity building programs, and collaborating with foreign partners to develop collective responses to global transnational challenges such as cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection, counter terrorism, transnational serious and organised crime, stabilising displaced populations, and irregular migration.

The _Global Issues and Engagement Branch_ supports international engagement with United Nations agencies, including the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and smaller fora, including the Quad, Five-Country Ministerial and AUKUS. The Branch sets the Department’s international engagement priorities, develops the Department’s International Strategy and houses the secretariat for the Department’s International Engagement Committee. The Branch manages the Department’s International Capacity Building Program, a project which seeks to fund capability development and engagement opportunities for our regional partners, and is also responsible for the Division’s governance, reporting and assurance functions.
