**The Role**
The Sea Power Centre - Australia (SPC-A) is seeking a motivated and proactive APS6 Archivist to manage an extensive collection of historical records, photographs, oral histories, ephemera and artefacts relating to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Under general direction, this newly created position will play a key role in the Navy History and Heritage team, working to bring our archive in line with best practice, and departmental and legislative requirements for records management.

The key duties of this role are to:

- Develop and maintain best practice archival collection management policies as part of a History and Heritage team in line with SPC-A goals.
- Ensure archival materials including paper records, photographs, oral histories and ephemera are appropriately catalogued and maintained in line with these policies.
- Contribute to the development of books, exhibitions, websites and social media to tell the story of the Royal Australian Navy.
- Provide assistance to researchers and other stakeholders within government and the wider public.
- Assess, sentence, and dispose of records in line with legislative and policy requirements.
- Ensure the archive maintains currency with relation to key Navy records.
- Conduct and arrange conservation and digitisation in line with SPC-A priorities.
- Manage staff and volunteers who assist with the archive’s functions.

**About our Team**
Working to the Head Navy History and Heritage, you are part of a small team that supports the Sea Power Centre’s remit to enhance the understanding of maritime power. This role sits in the History team, which is a blended workforce of ADF and APS personnel located in Fyshwick, Canberra. Navy History and Heritage includes a History team in Canberra, and Heritage Learning Centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and the Shoalhaven.

As part of our team, the APS 6 Archive manager will be instrumental in developing and implementing collection management policies and procedures for our paper-based, photographic and sound collections held in Canberra. They will also work as part of a team to assess historical records and other materials for inclusion, retention and disposal in line with defence policy, legislation and the goals for the archive, and assisting others in learning about classified document handling.
- Experience in cataloguing and/or managing archival records or heritage collections, preferably within defence, military history or military heritage environment.
- Experience with best practice records management including use of records authorities to sentence records.
- Familiarity with different historical materials that could be of use to researchers, and experience in promoting their use and making them available to answer enquiries.
- Well-developed skills dealing with public requests for information and the ability to conduct historical research and write the necessary response to the enquiry.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, and experience in dealing with stakeholders.
- A developed ability to work independently including strong time management and the ability to handle competing priorities.
- A strong team work ethic that supports others to meet team goals and the ability to mentor others to develop their historical abilities and networks.
- An understanding of the RAN’s history, or Australian military history more generally.
