**The opportunity**:
The Melbourne Children’s Trials Centre (MCTC) runs and supports clinical trials on the Melbourne Children’s campus. This includes advice and assistance in all aspects of trial design, planning, conduct and analysis. MCTC has an emphasis on promoting and developing novel trial designs. One such novel trial design is the concept of an embedded trial. For an embedded trial the treatment and outcome measures are embedded into routine care. This means trials are more relevant to participants and can be run more efficiently and rapidly. Embedded trials require access to a high quality electronic medical record (EMR). RCH uses EPIC, a world class Electronic Health Record (EHR). The MCTC aims to design new embedded trials that will use the functionality of EPIC.
The Centre for Health Analytics is an exciting collaborative venture for the Melbourne Children’s campus partners. The Centre supports the vision of Melbourne Children’s to become an internationally leading paediatric campus in the use of data to improve all aspects of patient care, operations, education and research. The Centre receives generous financial support from the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation and supports clinicians and researchers in a wide range of innovative projects using data for research and better care.
This position is for a Project Officer that can assist a clinician investigator in designing planning and running embedded trials at the Melbourne Children’s Campus. Embedded trials are clinical trials where the conduct of the trial is embedded in established clinical workflows and uses data captured as part of usual patient care. The trials are part of an exemplar project for the new Melbourne Children’s Centre for Health Analytics to demonstrate how the EMR can be used optimally and efficiently for patient centred research. Two trials are underway, and further trials are planned. The position will be supported by the trial statisticians in the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU) as well as the director and other staff of the MCTC. Importantly the project will also be supported by the analysts working in the EMR team. The position will have close ties with the Centre for Health Analytics and report both to the Medical Director of MCTC and Director of the Centre for Health Analytics. As an exemplar project the position will involve not only the successful completion of embedded trials but importantly will also assist with the generation of processes, relationships and infrastructure which will facilitate future embedded trials.
Challenges will involve working with a range of craft groups, being able to work independently and solve novel problems. The position will require an understanding of clinical work flows within RCH, and how the EHR is used clinically.
**Your responsibilities include**:
Working with MCTC in the process of calling for embedded trial ideas and assist with the evaluation of proposals for trials
Developing materials, processes and other infrastructure to facilitate future embedded trials
Preparing and presenting educational materials and seminars about embedded trials
Assisting in preparing interim and final reports describing the exemplar project progress and outcomes
Driving Project Management for specific smaller projects under supervision
Facilitating and leading internal and external meetings/workshops with stakeholders with support and direction to achieve project outcomes
**About you**:
Degree qualification in a relevant health or data field and an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation
An understanding of patient workflows at RCH or a similar hospital
An understanding of the basic principles of clinical research and in particular clinical trials
Familiarity with EPIC or similar Electronic Health Record.
An appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation
Demonstrated experience in project management including the planning, monitoring and evaluation
