**About the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences**
The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences is a leader in agricultural, food and veterinary science education and research in Australia.
The faculty comprises the Melbourne Veterinary School and the School of Agriculture and Food. The faculty operates across three campuses: Parkville, Werribee and Dookie. We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the lands upon which these campuses are situated, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples and the Yorta Yorta Nation. In addition to education and research, the faculty operates a veterinary hospital at Werribee, a broadacre farm at Dookie, and an equine hospital in Shepparton.
**About the Role**
The aim of this ARC project is to increase the accuracy of genomic prediction by discovering how sequence variants cause variation in multiple complex traits. As the Research Fellow (Quantitative Genetics) you will be responsible for analysis of genomic data on livestock and humans as part of a collaboration between Michael Goddard at the University of Melbourne and the Naomi Wray at the University in Queensland.
This position will primarily be located at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus and may be required to attend other sites and campuses.
Responsibilities include:
- As a research academic you are expected to conduct research under limited supervision as well as contribute to the reporting required to meet the project milestones and reporting schedule
- Under the supervision of more senior team members who will act as mentors, conduct research and contribute to the production of publications from that research in peer-reviewed journals, articles and oral / written presentations to industry and lay audiences
- Lead by example and ensure the values, standards and expectations appropriate behaviour in the workplace and the best interests of a leading University are upheld as well as the University’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace
- Prepare and participate in the communication and dissemination of information relating to the discipline
**About You**
You will have the ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships with the aim of obtaining research funding and be able to supervise honours and postgraduate research degree theses. You will possess excellent communication skills in English, written and oral, appropriate for scientific audiences as well as excellent organisational and administrative abilities and strong inter-personal skills. You will also present a strong track record of working collaboratively as a member of a team with a wide diversity of background, interests and at a variety of locations including positive interactions with academic and administrative staff of diverse cultural backgrounds. Having capacity to provide academic mentoring, counselling and consultation to students and/or more junior staff commensurate with experience is desirable but not essential.
You will also have:
- A PhD, or near completion of a PhD, awarded in quantitative genetics or closely related relevant discipline or equivalent qualification
- A demonstrated ability to conduct statistical analysis of data on quantitative traits in combination with genomic data
- A demonstrated knowledge of computing strategies for the analysis of very large data files
- Demonstrated ability to undertake original research under limited supervision, delivering against research objectives evidenced by a record of peer-reviewed publications and journal articles, as well as oral and written presentations to industry and lay audiences
