Job Title:

Correctional Counsellor

Location: Brisbane, Australia

This is a challenging role that requires a strong understanding of human behavior and the ability to provide effective support to offenders. As a Correctional Counsellor, you will play a crucial part in helping individuals change their behaviour and make positive choices.

  • Counselling Skills:
  • You will counsel offenders on the consequences of their actions and help them understand how their behavior impacts themselves and others.
  • Responsibility:
  • Be accountable for demonstrating experience of taking personal responsibility for following through on any work-related incident or emerging risk without instruction.
  • Experience:
  • Welfare provision experience in a human services or related field is essential for this role.
  • Previous experience in a criminal justice environment or similar human services area is highly desirable.
  • Community Engagement:
  • Engage with community groups and/or external service providers to provide support and guidance to offenders.
  • Personal Qualities:
  • Self-awareness and consistency with the attitudes and behaviors that need to be modelled in a correctional environment are critical for success in this role.
  • Resilience:
  • Remain motivated in achieving high standards in the delivery of essential frontline services.
  • Administrative Skills:
  • A well-rounded individual with administrative and technical skills will assist in achieving workplace goals.
  • Legislation and Policies:
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies, and procedures is essential for this role.
  • Communication Skills:
  • Effective communication and engagement with respect for colleagues, offenders, management, and stakeholders are crucial for success.
  • Diversity and Inclusion:
  • Experience in working collaboratively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds is highly desirable.
  • Risk Assessment:
  • Knowledge of risk assessment instruments and processes and their application within criminal justice settings is essential.
  • Report Writing:
  • Well-developed written communication skills with the ability to provide high-quality professional reports and case notes are required.
  • Verbal Communication:
  • Verbal communication skills with the ability to engage with a diverse client group and communicate effectively with stakeholders in a manner appropriate to the audience are essential.
