Job Summary

The AIDS Vancouver Island (AVI) team is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Crisis Navigator to join our team. As a Crisis Navigator, you will be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use related crises. Your primary responsibility will be to assess and triage calls, determining the level of risk and deciding the most appropriate response. You will work collaboratively with our team to dispatch and maintain communication with teams attending to crisis.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Manage the central call line for the AVI team, including phone lines and text messages.
  2. Assess and triage calls, initiating Community Care Plans and resourcing community supports as needed.
  3. Develop support and safety plans for individuals in crisis, and/or for Third Party Callers.
  4. Consult with community resources, family members, and peers as directed by the caller's needs.
  5. Redirect callers to access pertinent resources, including emergency services when necessary.
  6. Engage in assessments and obtain necessary information to assist the AVI team in responding to crisis calls.
  7. Gather and share vital information, liaising between the caller and the AVI team.
  8. Provide non-judgmental emotional support and crisis intervention, including assessment, problem-solving, and community resourcing.
  9. Complete thorough assessments of suicidal ideation and/or homicidal planning or attempts.
  10. Use assessment and screening tools to determine urgency and involve the AVI team or emergency services as needed.
  11. Assess needs and risk of callers, referring to appropriate services and providing short-term follow-up during wait times.
  12. Support behind-the-scenes systems, including communication with internal AVI programs, staff scheduling, payroll, and leave management.
  13. Consult with community members and resources as appropriate to client care.
  14. Prioritize multiple competing tasks using a methodological approach to problem-solve, make decisions, and communicate clearly.
  15. Assess, identify, plan, intervene, and evaluate bio-psycho-social-spiritual care needs in accordance with best practices and document.
  16. Monitor team workload and location, inputting and evaluating and triaging according to capacity.
  17. Implement active 'rescue' when an intervention is required.
  18. Maintain confidential client case files, including Community Care Plans, safety, and wellness assessments.
  19. Maintain familiarity with local resources, their interrelationships, and their function in delivering care in the community.
Qualifications
  1. Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in mental health services, de-escalation, and crisis response, and case management.
  2. Undergraduate degree in the mental health field (counseling, social work, psychiatric nursing).
  3. Crisis Intervention Skills, including extensive experience with situational awareness, mental health assessments, and suicide intervention.
  4. Able to respectfully engage and support Indigenous relationships, with a trauma-informed and decolonial lens.
  5. Demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge of harm reduction and health promotion practices.
  6. Demonstrated practice of social justice, cultural humility, and trauma-informed approaches to care.
