Official Visitor Role: Ensuring Quality of Custodial Care

As an Official Visitor, you will play a vital role in ensuring the well-being and dignity of inmates in NSW custodial centres. This community-based appointment requires one day a fortnight or one day a month commitment to conduct visits to custodial centres.

About the Position

The Inspector of Custodial Services appoints Official Visitors to inspect adult correctional facilities and youth justice centres, reporting to Parliament on their findings. The ICS oversees the Official Visitor Program, working to resolve enquiries and complaints made by inmates and monitor conditions and treatment in custodial centres.

Successful applicants are typically assigned to one centre for up to four years to conduct half-day or full-day visits once a fortnight or once a month. Appointments may be available at various centres, including Sydney region and across New South Wales.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular visits to custodial centres to assess the living conditions and treatment of inmates.
  • Report writing skills, computer skills, and access to email and internet are essential.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to attend training or corporate activities as required.

  • National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014.
  • Association disclosures.
  • Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012.
