Postdoctoral Research Position

We are seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our team at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania. This exciting opportunity is part of an NHMRC and MS Australia funded research project that aims to advance our understanding of multiple sclerosis using population genomics.

The successful candidate will be involved in cutting-edge research that uses statistical and genomics expertise to develop pipelines to detect balancing selection in the major histocompatibility (MHC) region of the genome using large population datasets. This role offers a unique opportunity to further develop leadership skills through planning and leading statistical genomics research and supporting the training and development of junior research staff and students.

About the Opportunity

This fixed-term position is based in Hobart and is available for 1 year with part-time hours considered for the right candidate. The annual salary range for this Academic Level A position is $80,462 - $104,049 plus 17% superannuation, making the total remuneration package up to $121,737.

Job Description

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will be responsible for making an effective and sustained contribution to the University's strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities. Your key tasks will include:

  • Undertaking high-quality research of national and increasingly international standing
  • Applying statistical and genomics expertise to develop pipelines to detect balancing selection in the MHC region of the genome using large population datasets
  • Maintaining productive and effective links inside the University, locally and nationally
  • Contributing to the internal development of Menzies through involvement in Institute planning activities, active membership of selected Institute committees, and philanthropic and community engagement activities

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, or a related field
  • Experience in the analysis of genomic data, including practical experience with the use of high-performance computing
  • Demonstrated skills in bioinformatics relevant programming languages such as Python, R, or Perl
  • A good record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national recognition
  • A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally
