Job Title

Aerospace Medicine Specialist/Flight Surgeon is a unique and challenging role that requires specialized care for pilots and crew members traveling in air or space.

The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct medical examinations, provide care for air and missile crews, determine fitness for flying and special duties, evaluate living and working environments, detect and control health hazards, participate in flying missions, develop preventive medicine programs, establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters, provide advice on aeromedical evacuation, serve on aviation mishap investigation boards, and serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Must have an M.D. or D.O. degree and completed an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty training.
  • If a graduate of a foreign medical school, must have attained permanent certification by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and complete an approved internship, residency and/or fellowship.
  • Must have proficiency in adult primary care medicine.
  • Must hold a current, active, permanent and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state or territory of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
  • Must possess an aeronautical rating of Flight Surgeon, Senior Flight Surgeon or Chief Flight Surgeon.
