The Group Accounting Policy team is a specialist team within Financial Services at Commonwealth Bank, responsible for ensuring the Group has adequate accounting policies to support external reporting requirements and business unit support for complex transactions.

About the Role

This role is a key part of the Group Accounting Policy team, supporting the Group CFO, Executive Leadership Team, and the Board in making efficient and confident decisions on complex accounting matters. The role involves engaging external audit and ensuring sound accounting advice is provided in line with international accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accounting Policy Development
    • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with international accounting standards.
    • Collaborate with internal auditors and external auditors to ensure that accounting practices are in line with the overall goals of the organization.
  • Financial Reporting
    • Oversee and evaluate the activities of the accounting staff, and provide for their professional development.
    • Contribute to and author various high-profile board papers explaining complex accounting matters.
    • Implement new accounting developments.
    • Sign off material transactions from an accounting perspective.
    • Provide Group-wide accounting training and updates.
    • Analyzing and solving accounting problems.
    • Preparing or leading the preparation of reports which summarize and forecast business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings, based on past, present, and expected operations.
    • Producing/reviewing accurate and timely financial reports, for internal and external use, in accordance with accounting standards.
  • Leadership and Collaboration
    • Lead and manage a team of accounting professionals to achieve business objectives.
    • Collaborate with other teams within Financial Services to ensure alignment and effective communication.

Requirements

  • Commercial Acumen
    • Excellent commercial acumen and analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to draw insights from accounting analysis.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills
    • Excellent verbal, written communication skills, and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge and Experience
    • Good knowledge of international accounting standards and financial reporting requirements.
    • Demonstrated experience in accounting policy development, financial reporting, and leadership.
