Job Description:

As the Head of Appeals, you will provide strategic leadership and support in representing the Director and the Office. You will effectively manage the caseload, leveraging your expertise to drive results.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Apear as lead counsel in complex and difficult appeals, including those of great significance to the community and to the development of the criminal law.
  • Institute and respond appeals in the ACT Supreme Court, ACT Court of Appeal and the High Court of Australia.
  • Exercise discretion to initiate, vary and discontinue criminal appeals, demonstrating sound judgment and expertise.
  • Build capacity within the office on appeal jurisprudence, fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Represent the Director and the Office outside the courts, promoting positive relationships and outcomes.
  • Exercise leadership in managing human and financial resources, enhancing staff professional development and small team management.
  • Provide high-level advice to the AFP and other investigative agencies, leveraging your expertise to drive results.
Requirements:

The position requires extensive experience initiating, responding to and appearing in appeals in the Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeal and High Court of Australia. You must have a comprehensive knowledge and mastery of criminal law and advocacy, demonstrated high level of skill and ability to communicate persuasively as an advocate with judges in criminal proceedings of great complexity. A proven commitment and ability to contribute to the professional development of legal and paralegal staff is essential. The successful applicant will also be admitted as a legal practitioner of an Australian State or Territory.
