Engineering Governance Expert
The Commonwealth Bank's Chief Information Officer for Technology team aims to have a world-class engineering capability, leveraging innovative and emerging technology to support customers and Group Strategy.
We seek best practices, both within the bank and in the broader technology ecosystem, discovering, nurturing, and spreading them to drive benefits for the Group and customers. We contribute to education programs, innovation, research, and partnerships that will prepare Australia for a digital future.
About the Role
As an Engineering Governance Expert, you will execute, operationalize, and continually improve engineering policies and standards. This role is pivotal in embedding consistent, efficient, and compliant engineering practices across the Group, ensuring alignment with industry best practice and regulatory requirements.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of engineering standards, including documentation, communication, and technical enforcement.
- Collaborate with engineering, architecture, security, and governance teams to implement and uplift engineering standards and frameworks.
- Operate and evolve central repositories (e.g., GitHub, Confluence) for standards, approved technologies, and related documentation.
- Coordinate regular content for communications channels (such as engineering newsletters and technical committees) to ensure standards and changes are visible and understood across the Group.
- Support technology radar and RFC (Request for Comment) processes, enabling engineers to propose, review, and adopt new technologies and practices.
- Track adoption and effectiveness of standards, identifying opportunities for improvement and enhanced assurance.
- Provide technical guidance in engineering governance activities, particularly around process lifecycle management and integration with existing systems and processes.
Requirements
- A strong technology background with an understanding of engineering principles, standards, and best practices is ideal.
- Proactivity, detail-orientation, and ability to take ownership of initiatives from conception to operationalization and iteration are required.
- The ability to foster a culture of continuous improvement and advocate for driving change is necessary.
- Ability to work as an individual contributor and in a multi-stakeholder environment on large initiatives, influencing stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience with Agile ways of working, including tooling such as Jira and Confluence, is preferred.
- Demonstrated risk and cost management mindset is essential.
About You
You should possess a strong passion for engineering governance, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Your ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive results-oriented initiatives will be highly valued.
