Data-Driven Modelling Project

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to contribute to the development of advanced mathematical models for locust hopper band movement. The successful applicant will play a key role in shaping strategies for optimal application of barrier treatment in locust control operations.

Key Objectives

  • To enhance current models through the inclusion of variation of individual animal characteristics such as hunger and epigenetic phase (solitary vs. gregarious) and resource distribution (notably food and water).
  • To utilize field and laboratory observations to refine the model's parameters and validate its predictive efficacy.
  • To develop data-driven models that can predict the behaviour of the bands in response to different control measures.

Research Environment

The project is part of a national initiative aimed at advancing analytics for the Australian grains industry, providing the student with opportunities for collaboration and professional growth.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • A strong background in mathematics, statistics or a related field.
