Strategic Communications Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced communications specialist to join our team in Canberra. As a Strategic Communications Specialist, you will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative communication products, activities, and events aligned with regional priorities and ICRC communications policies.

This role involves overseeing the delegation's communication strategies, plans of action, monitoring, reporting, and related tasks, particularly focusing on Australia and New Zealand. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing operational communication, community engagement, and promoting international humanitarian law (IHL)
  • Building National Red Cross / Red Crescent Society communication capacity
  • Public and digital communication, networking, and engagement
  • Information analysis and environment scanning

As a Strategic Communications Specialist, you will identify, conceptualize, create, and coordinate content collection, producing communication materials and drafting pitches for media coverage. You will also organize events, exhibitions, and marketing products, such as banners, posters, and brochures, while maintaining relationships and networks relevant to the ICRC.

Additionally, this role requires an understanding of media perceptions and follows local, regional, or global issues affecting the ICRC's reputation and capacity to operate in the region.

Responsibilities

Requirements
  • University degree or equivalent in a relevant field (communications, political science, international relations, or journalism)
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a field relevant to communication and/or prevention
  • Strong understanding of the ICRC's work and seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Excellent writing, communication, presentation, networking, organizational, and computer skills

Working hours are full-time (100%) with open-ended contract based in Canberra. The salary is competitive, plus 12% superannuation, with additional benefits including private health insurance contributions and opportunities for professional development.
