Seeking highly motivated PhD candidates to participate in a research project investigating the new African Diaspora in Australia and its embrace of Pentecostalism, with a focus on materiality, media, and religion.

Project Objectives:
  1. Understand the challenges faced by African-Australian communities
  2. Determine why many African Australians join Pentecostal churches
  3. Investigate how Pentecostal churches support translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging among African Diasporas in Australia
  4. Contribute to policy efforts improving outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia

As a PhD candidate, you will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia and with African Diasporas in the country, investigating questions such as:
- How do Pentecostal churches facilitate or hinder settlement processes?
- What impact do transnational religious fields have on post-secular social landscapes?

Requirements:
  • Anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related field background
  • African heritage preferred
  • Strong interests in intersections of migration and religion
  • Excellent research skills and ability to work independently
