Australia Research Fellowships: Pentecostalism and African Diaspora

We are seeking highly motivated PhD scholars to join a groundbreaking research project that explores the intersection of Pentecostalism and the African diaspora in Australia.

The project aims to investigate the challenges faced by African-Australian communities, determine why many members join Pentecostal churches, and examine how these churches support translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging.

Within this larger project, PhD candidates will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia and with African diasporas in the country. Key research questions include:

  1. How do Pentecostal churches facilitate or hinder processes of settlement and integration?
  2. How do Pentecostal megachurches generate transnational religious fields?
  3. What impact does this have on Australian cities' post-secular social landscapes?

We welcome applications from students of anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related fields. Particular emphasis is placed on strong interests in the intersections of migration and religion.

This PhD opportunity offers a unique chance for successful candidates to contribute to policy efforts aimed at improving outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Masters degree in a relevant field (anthropology, sociology, religious studies, etc.)
  • Strong background in research methods and data analysis
  • Demonstrated interest in the study of Pentecostalism and African diaspora
