African Diaspora Research Fellowships

The proposed research project seeks to investigate the new African Diaspora in Australia and its association with Pentecostalism. The study aims to comprehend the challenges faced by African-Australian communities, why many of their members join Pentecostal churches, and how these churches support community mobility and sense of belonging.
Project Objectives- To understand the complexities of challenges faced by African-Australian communities
- To determine the factors contributing to the high membership rate of Pentecostal churches among African Australians
- To examine the role of Pentecostal churches in supporting translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging among African-Australian communities
This project will involve ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia and African Diasporas in the country. Researchers will investigate questions such as: How do Pentecostal churches facilitate or hinder processes of settlement and 'integration'? What impact does this have on Australian cities' post-secular social landscapes?
Eligibility CriteriaWe welcome applications from students with a strong academic background in anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related fields. Particular emphasis is placed on candidates with a keen interest in the intersections of migration and religion. Applications from students of African heritage are especially encouraged.
