PhD Scholarships in African Diaspora Studies

We are offering two PhD scholarships to contribute to a research project investigating the new African Diaspora in Australia and its embrace of Pentecostalism, particularly after arrival.

Project Overview

The project aims to understand challenges faced by African-Australian communities, determine why many members join Pentecostal churches, investigate church support for community translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging, and contribute to policy efforts improving outcomes for African new arrivals.

Research Focus

Within this project, PhD candidates will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia and African Diasporas in the country, investigating processes of settlement and integration, impact on Australian cities' post-secular social landscapes, and more.

Eligibility

Applicants from anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related fields are welcome. The project is suitable for candidates with interests in the intersections of migration and religion, especially those of African heritage.
