About the Role

The New Zealand Defence Force is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Airborne Tactical Officer to join our team. As a Mission Commander for maritime aviation, you will be responsible for commanding aircraft sensors, communication systems, and weapons. Your key role will be to evaluate sensor information and perform tactical analysis to employ the helicopter in the best way to accomplish the mission.

This challenging and rewarding role requires strong leadership skills, excellent communication abilities, and a deep understanding of maritime operations. You will work closely with ship's command teams to ensure successful mission execution and will be responsible for briefing and advising on all aspects of aviation matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commanding aircraft sensors, communication systems, and weapons
  • Evaluating sensor information and performing tactical analysis
  • Briefing and advising on all aspects of aviation matters
  • Working closely with ship's command teams

Training and Career Progression

To become a successful Airborne Tactical Officer, you will undergo extensive training that includes Junior Officer Common Training, Observer training at RNZAF Base Ohakea, and conversion onto the SH-2G(I) helicopter. Once qualified, you will be posted to 6 Squadron at RNZAF Base Auckland, where you will gain experience as a core member of a flight and develop your skills in low-level visual navigation, high-altitude instrument navigation, and tactical employment of the aircraft.

Your career progression will be marked by continuous training and development, including instructor training, specialist courses, and opportunities for deployment overseas. With dedication and hard work, you can expect to advance to the role of Flight Commander, leading all aspects of ship's helicopter operations.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 17 years of age upon entry
  • Be free of any criminal conviction for the previous two years
  • Pass an Officer Selection Board
  • Hold a NCEA Level 2 certificate
  • Meet the minimum entry fitness standards
