About the Role
The New Zealand Defence Force is seeking highly skilled individuals to fill the role of Airborne Tactical Officer, also known as an Observer. As a key member of the naval aviation team, you will be responsible for mission planning, warfare, and tactical analysis.
As an Observer, your primary responsibilities will include briefing Commanding Officers on missions, utilising aircraft sensors and communication systems to employ the helicopter in the best way to accomplish the mission. You will work closely with pilots, technicians, and other crew members to ensure successful operations.

Career Progression
Once you complete Junior Officer Common Training (JOCT), you will conduct Observer training at RNZAF Base Ohakea. After completing basic Observer training, you can expect to return to Auckland to conduct conversion onto the SH-2G(I) helicopter. Once fully qualified, you can expect to fly as a core member of a flight, gaining experience ashore and embarked on RNZN ships.
With experience, you can advance to the role of Flight Commander, responsible for all aspects of ship helicopter operations. Additionally, there is potential for deployment as an officer to overseas operations.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this role, you must meet certain requirements:
- Be a minimum of 17 years of age upon entry.
- Be free of any criminal conviction for the previous two years.
- Pass an Officer Selection Board.
You must also be medically fit for service, meet minimum entry fitness standards, and meet citizenship and security requirements. Upon completion of your training, you will be contractually obliged to carry out a return of service to the Navy for 10 years.
