Canberra, ACT, Australia Australian Government Department of Defence Full time

The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM) Officer to conduct technical security inspections, provide technical security advice, and work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team within the Defence Security Division in Security and Estate Group.

The TSCM officer will regularly use a wide range of electronic equipment and machinery, and will employ physical searching techniques, and their technical knowledge, to ensure Defence locations are protected from listening and recording devices. They may also need to analyse potential methods that adversaries may use to compromise a Defence facility, to reverse engineer the appropriate protective security measures.

The officer will also provide security advice around existing technical threats and will use risk-based principles and expert knowledge of device capabilities to protect Defence and its assets and information.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP).

About our Team
The TSCM team conducts technical security inspections at Defence locations across Australia and internationally. They identify the presence and location of eavesdropping devices, highlight technical threat vulnerabilities, and provide assurance that a particular area is not subject to covert technical surveillance operations.

The successful candidate will get to work alongside civilian and military personnel who work together to secure Defence information from adversaries, in an ever-evolving threat environment.

Team members travel routinely and engage with all areas of Defence and Defence Industry partners as well as other government agencies. All positions in the team attract a Building Defence Capability Payment.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this role is a highly skilled and motivated professional with a strong background in technical security, proven experience, and a thorough understanding of electronic surveillance methods and countermeasures.

The candidate will possess a competent technical background enabling them to proficiently use a suite of electronic equipment and employ searching techniques. They will also require:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interpret and convey security policy information and technical security advice to diverse audiences;
  • Extensive collaboration with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Lead small teams for domestic and international security operations and be accountable for team logistics and reporting.
