The Salvation Army Youth Services offers a comprehensive range of programs that engage with young individuals throughout Australia. Our initiatives create purposeful pathways for youth to explore opportunities, build support networks, and actively participate in their communities. Our services encompass various programs, including housing assistance, driver education, employment training, substance abuse support, social activities, therapeutic interventions, and youth justice initiatives.

Role Overview

We are looking for a dedicated Youth Support Worker to provide both practical and emotional assistance to young individuals facing homelessness and crises. This role involves connecting clients with suitable community service providers and ensuring a safe, secure, and clean environment in a 24-hour accommodation setting. Collaboration with the broader team is essential to achieve optimal outcomes for the youth we serve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain supportive relationships with clients, ensuring respect, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Foster a cooperative relationship with all team members to ensure effective program implementation and service delivery.
  • Design, implement, and assess relevant life skills and other programs for clients.
  • Provide information and referral services to various organizations and individuals as needed.
  • Assist clients in developing or re-establishing appropriate family and social connections.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A qualification in social work, youth work, community services, or a related field.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Working with Children Card.
  • Current first aid certification or the ability to obtain one promptly.
  • Experience working with young individuals who are homeless or in crisis within a case management framework.
  • Experience with youth from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use issues, mental health conditions, and other disabilities is desirable.
  • Proven ability to manage unpredictable situations and behaviors, including violence and challenges related to homelessness and substance abuse.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including data collection and report writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to employ active listening skills, assess crisis situations, and apply crisis intervention techniques, including conflict resolution.

Employment Details

This is a permanent, part-time position (11 hours per week). Salary and conditions are aligned with the Social, Community, Home Care, and Disability CRISIS Level 1 Award.
