About Us

As a pivotal emergency service organization, QFES is dedicated to safeguarding individuals and properties throughout Queensland by executing effective prevention, preparation, response, and recovery operations in various emergency scenarios.

Encompassing the Fire and Rescue Service, the Rural Fire Service, and the State Emergency Service, QFES also collaborates with other volunteer groups to provide emergency assistance to the community.

QFES operates as a unified department with diverse services, capabilities, and partnerships.

Role Overview

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services performs distinct functions, being the sole entity in Australia that offers high-quality fire, rescue, emergency, and disaster management services through a single agency. This integrated approach enhances safety outcomes for the community.

Essential Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Written consent from the employer to respond to incidents and emergencies (if applicable)
  • Reside or work within a reasonable distance of the auxiliary fire station
  • Australian Permanent Resident Status
  • Valid Manual C Class driver's license

QFES expects all auxiliary firefighters to commit to the following throughout their tenure:

  • Responding to incident and emergency calls –
    • 50% of calls as a day worker with standard hours; or
    • 30% of calls as a shift worker or with non-standard hours
  • Attending 75% of scheduled drills and training sessions
  • Acquiring an MRV license, at personal expense, within 12 months of employment
  • Engaging in ongoing skills development and maintenance programs, including first aid/emergency care.
  • Adhering to QFES policies and procedures, including the code of conduct, safety, and personal presentation standards

Your Responsibilities

  • As part of a team, respond to fire and other emergency situations. Note: Auxiliary Firefighters who have not satisfactorily completed all pre-operational aspects of ARTEP (FFGC085) may attend all activities related to their designated station, EXCEPT emergency incidents.
  • Enhance community safety and emergency preparedness by participating in community education initiatives.
  • Develop and sustain competencies by actively engaging in regular drills and relevant training courses provided by QFES to ensure safety and effectiveness on the fire ground.
  • Maintain the required attendance standards for emergency incidents and training.
  • Operate specialized firefighting and rescue equipment safely and effectively.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and cleanliness of station facilities.
  • Ensure the upkeep and repair of operational equipment and station facilities.
  • Assist with incident reporting and general station administration as needed.
  • As a vital member of the station team, appointees shall also:
  • Foster a positive team environment in all work activities
  • Comply with legislative, policy, and procedural requirements relevant to the position.
  • Communicate effectively with QFES personnel, other emergency service providers, and the general public.
  • Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment by adhering to organizational health principles and procedures.
