Gerontological Specialist

This is a fulfilling opportunity to contribute to a Dementia Centre initiative focused on supporting individuals living with dementia transitioning from hospital settings to residential care or back home.

The Opportunity

As a Gerontological Specialist, you will have the chance to apply your expertise in assessment and biopsychosocial approaches, implement innovative strategies to prevent or respond to changes in behaviour related to dementia.

  • Support families, caregivers, and clinical staff to understand how dementia impacts each individual.
  • Equip carers and clinicians to prevent and respond to behaviour changes through modelling, coaching, and development of resources including behaviour support planning.
  • Be able to synthesise information, through observation and written documentation to provide recommendations that are relationship centred and informed by evidence-based best practice.
  • Develop reports that are contextualised to individual situations and people, effecting change on the ground and improving quality of life for people living with dementia.
  • Undertake a range of assessments to understand the holistic experience of the person and their care network.

We are seeking an experienced professional who can work in partnership with stakeholders to build capability across the home and aged care sectors. You will contribute to research, projects, and programs, working innovatively to meet the changing needs of the sector.

You will have:

  • Expertise in supporting people living with dementia.
  • Experience in Australian residential aged care and/or community aged care.
  • Relatability and ability to share knowledge in a way that supports change at all levels.
  • High-level negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
