About this Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity within our Oceanography and Shelf Processes Team for a Marine Research Scientist specializing in Physical Oceanography and Coastal Processes. As part of our Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems and Industries in Tropical Australia Research Program, you will engage in interdisciplinary collaborations addressing cumulative stressors affecting various tropical marine habitats due to coastal and catchment developments.

In this role, you will lead significant initiatives, including managing observational programs across northern Australia, developing numerical modeling tools pertinent to tropical coastal and continental shelf systems, and researching sediment transport processes at estuarine and coastal scales. Your leadership will guide colleagues, support staff, and students, ensuring the effective allocation of resources to tackle scientific and environmental challenges. You will be driven to meet the objectives of the MPOWIR Strategy 2025, aiming for positive impacts on Australia's marine environment.

About You

To be considered for this position, you should possess a PhD in a relevant field (such as physical oceanography, coastal processes, coastal engineering, or marine biogeochemistry) or equivalent experience, along with extensive professional background in observational and numerical modeling studies of coastal marine environments. Your qualifications should demonstrate:

  • Advanced capability in developing and applying numerical models for coastal and shelf processes;
  • Strong analytical skills for spatial and time series data;
  • Familiarity with contemporary hydrodynamic, sediment transport, and biogeochemical modeling tools;
  • Experience in managing ocean observing networks;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.
