Role Overview

The Defence and Veterans' Service Commissioner role is a key appointment for an outstanding leader who can drive reform across the Defence ecosystem.

The Australian Government invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to lead this new, Non-corporate Commonwealth entity created in response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.

The Commissioner will provide independent oversight and evidence-based advice to government on system reforms to improve suicide prevention and wellbeing outcomes for serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee reform across the Defence ecosystem as the accountable authority of the entity.
  • Exercise legislative powers and functions, upholding independence and integrity.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with stakeholders, including those with lived experience of suicide and suicidality.
  • Provide independent, evidence-based advice on system reforms to improve wellbeing outcomes for Defence personnel.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

Expressions of interest are invited from eligible and suitably qualified persons. The successful applicant will be appointed on a full-time basis for a period not exceeding five years.
