Job Title: Principal Aboriginal Consultant

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Aboriginal Consultant to join our team at Child Protection. As a key member of our Far North Far West team, you will play a critical role in providing leadership and expertise to embed and operationalise the Practice Approach and the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle.

About the Role

This is a full-time term vacancy until 04 July 2025. You will be responsible for working in partnership with the Practice Leader to provide local leadership, sharing expert social work and cultural knowledge, and driving practice excellence to achieve improved outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people, their families and carers.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Working in partnership with the Practice Leader to provide local leadership and embed the Practice Approach and the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle.
  2. Sharing expert social work and cultural knowledge to drive practice excellence and achieve improved outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people, their families and carers.
  3. Identifying skill and knowledge gaps amongst Office staff and facilitating training or other development activities.
  4. Facilitating cultural wellbeing/support meetings with Aboriginal staff within the Region to identify cultural practice themes and issues.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the political, historical and socio-economic circumstances that have affected Aboriginal people, their culture and communities, as well as current trends and critical and emerging issues. You will also have experience in a social work or case management capacity working directly with children and families, where issues of welfare, protection, safety and family support formed a central component.

Essential Qualifications

A degree level qualification in Social Work which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Persons of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who have the appropriate background and skills but do not have the essential qualification, may apply for and be engaged/assigned to the role of Social Worker and will be entitled to apply for any Allied Health Professional roles requiring a qualification in Social Work within the Department for Child Protection (DCP).

The successful candidate will have the ability to engage and motivate staff to achieve practice excellence, and will have a strong understanding of the political, historical and socio-economic circumstances that have affected Aboriginal people, their culture and communities.
