City of Glen Eira, Australia State of Washington Full time
Job Title: Park Ranger 2 In-Training
Location: Statewide
___________________________

This is an exceptional opportunity to engage in a fulfilling career as a Park Ranger within Washington's stunning state parks. As a Park Ranger, you will work in natural settings, share your enthusiasm for the outdoors with visitors, and safeguard both the public and the state's environmental assets. The role offers numerous avenues for professional development and career advancement. Although law enforcement is a component of the position, Park Ranger 2 roles are fully commissioned and equipped.

**IMPORTANT UPDATE** In light of recent legislative changes, candidates who have not attended a law enforcement academy must enroll in the 18-week Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA), with costs covered by the Park and Recreation department.

Those who have completed a law enforcement academy (not BLEA) will need to undergo a general equivalency certification process, which includes providing a syllabus of the completed academy. If certification is not possible, candidates must attend the full 18-week BLEA.

Park Ranger 2 personnel are tasked with the protection, preservation, and enhancement of state parks and natural resources, ensuring the safety and well-being of park visitors. Responsibilities include public engagement, disseminating information, identifying and safeguarding sensitive ecological and archaeological sites, and delivering educational presentations about park resources. Specific duties may vary by park location.

This recruitment effort aims to fill both current and future full-time, permanent Park Ranger positions across Washington State. Park assignments will be determined based on various factors, including candidate preferences and agency requirements, and will be discussed post-offer.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • A valid, unrestricted driver's license (excluding corrective lenses).
  • Minimum age of 21 years at the time of hire.
  • Two years of college education (Military service, commissioned law enforcement experience, or relevant experience in Natural Resource or Recreation fields may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Prior experience in a State or National Park setting.
  • College coursework in Natural Resources or Recreation.
  • Bilingual capabilities in English and Spanish.
  • Familiarity with Native American tribal culture, history, and practices.

**Candidates must have graduated from a qualifying law enforcement academy or must have served as a commissioned law enforcement officer or WA State commissioned Park Ranger within the last 24 months. Those with prior experience in a fully commissioned law enforcement role in Washington State but not within the last 24-60 months may still apply. Applications will be assessed by subject matter experts to verify qualifications. Successful candidates may need to complete additional equivalency training.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

To ensure consideration, candidates must complete the online job application. This recruitment may be utilized to fill multiple vacancies.

To be considered, your application package must include:

  1. A complete online application detailing all work history (including supervisors' names and contact information) and education for the past ten years.
  2. A Letter of Interest.
  3. Five professional references with contact details. Supervisors will be contacted for verification; letters of recommendation are not required.
  4. A completed Supplemental Questionnaire, which will be reviewed by subject matter experts to confirm compliance with Park Ranger law enforcement standards.
  5. For veterans, a member 4 copy of DD214, DD256, or NGB22 is required.
  6. Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, showing degrees and credits earned. International transcripts must include a foreign transcript evaluation.
  7. Certificate or syllabus from a Law Enforcement Academy (if applicable).

All information provided in your application must support your responses to the application questions. Inconsistencies may lead to disqualification from the recruitment process.

This position is part of the non-supervisory bargaining unit represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). This job posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies.
