Family Mentor Role

The Deaf Connect organization is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to lead a supportive and inclusive environment for Deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing Australians. This role involves empowering hearing parents and welcoming families into the Deaf community by demonstrating how to navigate the world as a Deaf person, passing on language and culture to the next generation of Deaf individuals.

This position requires expertise in training designed by Deaf leaders and Teachers of the Deaf, with paid training and ongoing professional development opportunities. The successful candidate will join Deaf Connect's dynamic Early Intervention Team, collaborating with Teachers of the Deaf, Speech Therapists, and Occupational Therapists to make a significant impact on the lives of Deaf Australians.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Early Parent Bonding: Support early parent bonding with deaf babies and children, creating a strong foundation for their development.
  • Visual Communication Strategies: Model visual communication strategies to enrich understanding and communication.
  • Auslan Promotion: Ensure access to Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to promote language acquisition.
  • Confidence Building: Foster confidence and a positive identity through the concept of “Deaf Gain”.
  • Literacy Development: Nurture early literacy – preparing children to read.
  • School Transition: Support a smooth transition to school, setting them up for success on their educational journey.
  • Community Linkage: Link families to the Deaf Community.

Requirements:
  • Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • Fluent Auslan user.
  • Well-developed linguistic and cultural experience.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working with children & adults in a multi-age group family setting.
  • Current NSW Working With Children Check.
  • NDIS Worker Clearance.
  • Current driver's license.
