Aboriginal Health Practitioner Role

Culturally safe and autonomous primary health care services are provided to adolescent Aboriginal clients in this role. Wellbeing is promoted, health education is provided, and training is offered to other health workers and the wider community.

This key position within the Paediatric department at Royal Darwin Hospital delivers specialist care to children across the Northern Territory.

  • A culturally responsive service is delivered in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Case management and healthcare plans are developed, and support is provided for Aboriginal people in complying with their care plan.
  • Community members are engaged to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery.
  • Cultural support and health practice are provided to other health professionals to build cultural competence and responsiveness.
  • Clinical supervision, mentoring, and support are provided for trainee Aboriginal Health Practitioners to develop competent practitioners.
  • In partnership with other health professionals, health education and promotion programs are provided in a community.
  • Service quality standards, work health and safety policies, and procedures are followed to ensure high-quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • A positive workplace culture is fostered through exemplary leadership practice and role-modelling behaviour.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia registration is required, with no conditions.
  • A successfully completed HLT50213 Diploma in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice is necessary, along with evidence of continuous professional development activities.
  • Demonstrated local cultural knowledge and exercise of cultural respect and safety at the individual and family levels are required, along with the ability to provide cultural awareness training to non-local health staff.
