Job Title: Strategic Legal Advisor

The Department of Education delivers and regulates state-wide learning and development services, catering to approximately one-third of all Victorians across early childhood and school education sectors.

The Legal Division provides highly valued legal services supporting the department's strategic objectives, key reforms, and managing legal risk. In doing so, it offers direct, practical, and strategic legal advice to portfolio ministers, senior staff, and government schools, serving over 650,000 Victorian Government school students.

The role reports to the Director, Commercial and Legislation Branch, and manages a team of lawyers together with a co-Principal Lawyer and Manager.

  • Innovate policy and legal projects to enhance department practice in areas of legal risk, leveraging skills and expertise of others.
  • Analyze complex issues identifying whole-of-department and whole-of-government concerns where they arise.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and experience in legislative drafting, law reform, and Victorian legislation processes, delivering quality legal services to corporate clients in education and early childhood portfolios.
  • Draft statutory interpretation and governance advice using technical legal expertise.

The Strategic Legal Advisor drives excellence in legal services by instigating improvements in advice quality and working arrangements, proactively seeking engagement with other business units within the Legal Division and the department.
