About the Role

The X-ray Facility is a key component of the renowned Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC), a multidisciplinary instrumental core facility located at UNSW Sydney's Kensington Campus. This facility supports a diverse array of researchers in the fields of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. As one of the largest X-ray facilities in Australia, it boasts a team of 12 skilled professionals and 18 major instruments across five laboratories, catering to over 500 researchers at UNSW and beyond, as well as numerous commercial clients. The Facility provides an extensive range of laboratory-based X-ray techniques, including small molecule crystallography, powder and thin-film X-ray diffraction, high-energy micro-CT, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and surface analysis techniques.

In this role, you will report to the Executive Director of MWAC and work closely to align X-ray science initiatives with UNSW's overarching research objectives. You will engage in both independent and collaborative research on X-ray methodologies and oversee the operational management of the X-ray facility to support various stakeholders. Your responsibilities will include leading a team of research scientists and technical staff, planning for new capabilities, overseeing publications and reports, expanding commercial services in collaboration with the Chemical Consulting Laboratory, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.

As a Level D professional, you will also be responsible for shaping the facility's design and strategic direction, establishing a robust research program, conducting collaborative experiments, networking with external organizations, supervising student projects, leading publications and grant applications, and contributing to the leadership of MWAC.

Candidate Profile

Senior Lecturer – Level C

The ideal candidate will possess a relevant PhD and be recognized as an authority in Material, Chemical, or Physical Sciences, with a research portfolio that aligns with the Centre's mission and demonstrates expertise in X-ray techniques.

Additionally, you should showcase leadership in collaborative research with impactful outcomes, a proven track record of securing external funding, and a strong understanding of research ethics and compliance. Familiarity with commercial X-ray applications and the ability to manage commercial services are essential, along with experience in teaching and supervising in a multi-user research environment and preparing samples for X-ray analysis using relevant data analysis software.

Moreover, you should demonstrate experience in leading a team of research scientists and technical staff to achieve operational excellence and innovation, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, and have experience in budget management, major equipment procurement, and resource management.

Associate Professor - Level D

Additional qualifications include advanced project management skills, strong negotiation abilities, a successful history of supervising students and post-doctoral researchers, staff leadership including change management, and a successful track record in obtaining funding for research infrastructure and collaborative projects.
