Position Overview
The X-ray Facility operates under the esteemed Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC), a multidisciplinary core facility at UNSW Sydney, dedicated to supporting researchers across Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Recognized as one of Australia's largest facilities of its kind, it boasts a team of 12 skilled professionals and 18 major instruments across five laboratories, catering to over 500 researchers and numerous commercial clients. The Facility provides an extensive range of laboratory-based X-ray techniques, including small molecule crystallography, powder and thin-film X-ray diffraction, high-energy micro-CT, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and surface analysis through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ToF-SIMS. Materials researchers play a pivotal role in shaping the Facility's strategic direction, supported by a recent investment of $3.5M to enhance key instrumentation.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director of MWAC, you will work closely to align X-ray science initiatives with UNSW's research objectives, engage in both independent and collaborative research on X-ray methodologies, and oversee the operations of the X-ray facility to meet stakeholder needs. Your responsibilities will include leading a team of research scientists and technical staff, planning for new capabilities, managing publications and reports, expanding commercial services in collaboration with the Chemical Consulting Laboratory, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
As a Level D professional, you will also be responsible for guiding the Facility's design and strategic direction, establishing a robust research program, conducting collaborative experiments, networking with external organizations, supervising student projects, leading publication efforts, and contributing significantly to MWAC's leadership and professional initiatives.

Candidate Profile
Senior Lecturer – Level C
The ideal candidate will possess a relevant PhD and be recognized as an authority in Material, Chemical, or Physical Sciences, with a research portfolio that aligns with the Centre's mission and demonstrates expertise in X-ray techniques.
Proven leadership in collaborative research with significant outcomes, a history of securing external funding, and knowledge of research ethics and compliance are essential. Familiarity with commercial X-ray applications and the ability to manage commercial services are also required, along with experience in teaching and supervising in a multi-user research environment and preparing samples for X-ray analysis using relevant data analysis software.
Additionally, candidates should demonstrate experience in leading a team of research scientists and technical staff to achieve operational excellence and innovation, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills, budget management capabilities, and expertise in major equipment procurement and resource management.
Associate Professor - Level D
Additional qualifications include high-level project management skills, strong negotiation abilities, a successful track record of supervising students and post-doctoral researchers, staff leadership including change management, and a proven history of obtaining funding for research infrastructure and collaborative projects.
