Work type: full time
Location: Sydney, NSW
Categories: Academic Leadership, Head of School / Director

Overview of the Role

This position is integral to a thriving multidisciplinary instrumental core facility located at the Kensington Campus of UNSW Sydney, dedicated to advancing research in Science, Engineering, and Medicine. The X-ray Research Facility stands as one of Australia's largest, equipped with 12 skilled personnel and 18 major instruments distributed across five laboratories, serving over 500 researchers at UNSW and beyond, alongside a diverse array of commercial clients. The Facility provides an extensive range of laboratory-based X-ray methodologies, including small molecule crystallography, powder and thin-film X-ray diffraction, high-energy micro-CT, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and surface analysis techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ToF-SIMS. Materials researchers play a pivotal role in shaping the Facility's strategic direction, with recent investments of $3.5M aimed at enhancing key instrumentation.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of MWAC, at Level C, you will collaborate closely with the Executive Director to ensure alignment of X-ray scientific strategies with UNSW's overarching research objectives. Your responsibilities will encompass both independent and collaborative research initiatives focused on X-ray methodologies, as well as managing the operational aspects of the X-ray facility to effectively support its stakeholders. This includes leading a team of research scientists and technical staff, planning for the introduction of new capabilities, overseeing the publication of research findings, expanding commercial services in partnership with the Chemical Consulting Laboratory, and upholding health and safety standards.

Additional responsibilities at Level D will involve spearheading the facility's design and strategic vision, establishing a robust research program, conducting collaborative experiments, networking with external organizations, supervising student projects, leading publication efforts, and contributing to MWAC's leadership while making significant professional contributions.
