High-Resolution Mapping of Soil Organic Carbon

We are seeking a highly skilled Ph.D. candidate to develop an advanced system for mapping soil organic carbon at the field scale, covering the entire Walloon territory.

The focus will be on croplands, as these are most vulnerable to soil organic carbon loss. The performance of European Sentinel 2 and Sentinel 1 satellites, as well as the Italian PRISMA and German EnMAP satellites, will be investigated in detail.

To achieve this goal, we need to develop methods based on a reference sampling strategy, and then upscale them to the Walloon region with high precision.

The system should utilize Earth Observation data that is calibrated and validated by regional soil databases and provide up-to-date soil organic carbon maps for at least two separate time slices.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that combines remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and soil science to address a pressing environmental issue.

Key qualifications include:

  • A strong background in geospatial analysis, remote sensing, or a related field
  • Excellent programming skills in languages such as Python or R
  • Experience with satellite imagery processing and analysis software (e.g., ENVI, ERDAS Imagine)
  • Familiarity with database management systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
