About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Flood Risk Management Specialist to join our team at the City of Newcastle. As a key member of our Environment and Sustainability Service Unit, you will play a critical role in leading our flood risk management program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Development of Flood Studies: You will be responsible for leading the development, appraisal, and implementation of our flood studies and flood risk management investigations.
  • Provide Specialist Advice: As a subject matter expert, you will provide specialist advice to internal and external stakeholders and the community regarding the application of best practice flood risk and water cycle management into our policies, plans, and projects.
  • Manage Flood Risk Emergency Response: You will support our flood risk emergency management efforts and develop the water-sensitive cities action plan.
  • Represent the City of Newcastle: You will represent the City of Newcastle in external stakeholder forums and workshops.
Core Projects
  • Hexham and Woodberry Swamp Flood Study: You will project manage and lead the technical working group overseeing the Hexham and Woodberry Swamp Flood Study, facilitating input from Maitland and Cessnock Councils and DCCEEW, grant management, and the re-establishment of our flood risk management committee.
  • Review of Flash Flood Alert System: You will review our Flash Flood Alert System against current best practice and provide upgrade recommendations.
  • Lower Hunter Flood Plain Cumulative Infill: You will facilitate executive management, councillor, and community awareness of the outcomes of the Lower Hunter Flood Plain Cumulative Infill and its integration into our planning framework.
  • Community Engagement and Education: You will investigate opportunities for community engagement and education on flood risk.
  • Flood Impact Queries: You will provide internal advice for flood impact queries, particularly within high flood risk areas such as Wallsend and Broadmeadow, with a focus on achieving multiple benefit outcomes.
